West Virginia has what is known as “constitutional carry,” meaning that residents who are 21 years of age or older, not prohibited by state or federal law from possessing a firearm, and are United States citizens or legal residents can carry a concealed weapon without a license.
However, there are still benefits to obtaining an optional concealed handgun license (CHL) in West Virginia:
- Reciprocity: A West Virginia CHL is recognized by many other states, allowing you to legally carry concealed while traveling.
- Purchase Exemptions: A CHL can serve as an alternative to the NICS background check when purchasing a firearm.
- Carry in Restricted Areas: A CHL allows you to carry concealed in certain areas that may otherwise be off-limits, such as the Capitol Complex or certain municipal areas with specific ordinances.
For those between 18 and 21 years of age, a provisional CHL is required to carry concealed.
It is important to remember that even with constitutional carry or a CHL, there are still places where carrying a firearm is prohibited, such as schools and courthouses.
It is crucial to familiarize yourself with all applicable laws and regulations regarding firearm possession and concealed carry in West Virginia.
