The Mercer County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Weapons & Tactics (SWAT) team is a highly-trained unit specializing in high-risk law enforcement operations. Our mission is to resolve critical incidents safely and effectively, protecting both the public and our fellow officers.

Mission Focus

The SWAT team is primarily deployed in situations requiring specialized skills and tactics, including:

  • High-Risk Warrant Service: Executing warrants in situations where there is a high likelihood of armed resistance or violence.
  • Barricade Subjects: Resolving incidents where individuals have barricaded themselves and pose a threat to themselves or others.
  • Hostage and Negotiation Situations: Responding to hostage situations and engaging in negotiations to secure the release of hostages and apprehend suspects peacefully.
  • Active Shooter Response: Quickly neutralizing active shooter threats to minimize casualties and restore safety.

Specialized Training

SWAT team members undergo rigorous training to ensure they are prepared for the challenges of high-risk operations. This includes:

  • Annual In-State and Out-of-State Training: We participate in intensive training programs both within West Virginia and across the country to stay abreast of the latest tactics and techniques.
  • Advanced Entry Tactics: Mastering techniques for entering buildings and other structures safely and effectively.
  • Sniper Training: Developing precision marksmanship skills for long-range engagements.
  • Less-Than-Lethal Techniques: Training in the use of less-than-lethal options, such as tasers and beanbag rounds, to de-escalate situations whenever possible.
  • Breaching: Learning specialized techniques for breaching doors, windows, and walls to gain entry into secured areas.

Equipment & Resources

The SWAT team is equipped with specialized gear and vehicles designed for high-risk operations, including:

  • Tactical Vehicles: Armored vehicles for safe transport and protection in hostile environments.
  • Ballistic Shields: Providing protection from gunfire and other projectiles.
