We actively enforce state and county laws related to domesticated animals, while also promoting responsible pet ownership and educating the public on animal welfare.

The Animal Control Division is committed to protecting the welfare of both animals and residents of Mercer County. We provide a variety of services aimed at ensuring public safety and promoting responsible pet ownership.

Our Key Services:

  • Enforcement of Animal Control Laws: We diligently investigate all complaints related to animal cruelty, neglect, stray animals, dangerous dogs, and any other violations of West Virginia state code and Mercer County ordinances.
  • Animal Rescue: We rescue and provide temporary shelter for stray, abandoned, or injured domesticated animals, ensuring they receive appropriate care and attention.
  • Public Education: We are proactive in promoting responsible pet ownership by offering a range of resources and information. This includes guidance on proper animal care, licensing requirements, and the importance of rabies vaccinations.
  • Bite Investigation: We respond promptly to all animal bite reports, conducting thorough investigations and implementing necessary measures to protect public health and safety.
  • Lost and Found Pets: We actively assist in reuniting lost pets with their owners and work diligently to facilitate the adoption of unclaimed animals into loving homes.

  • Jurisdiction: The MCSO Animal Control Unit is responsible for domesticated animals only (dogs, cats, livestock, etc.). If you encounter an issue with wildlife, please contact the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR).
  • After Hours Emergencies: For animal-related emergencies outside of regular business hours, please contact the Mercer County 911 Dispatch Center.
